たてまつる【奉る】

1 〔奉呈する〕 offer; present; tender; address.

●御神酒(_おみき)を奉る make [offer] a libation 《to a god》

・神殿に祝詞(_のりと)を奉る say [offer] a Shinto prayer to [before] the god of a shrine

・人に称号を奉る call [dub, name, entitle] sb 《the Prince of Blues》.

2 〔祭り上げる〕 revere at a distance; set sb on a pedestal.

●長老として奉る revere sb [look up to sb] because of his [her] age

・会長に奉る make sb chairman merely as a matter of form [in name (only)]; 《口》 kick sb upstairs and make him [her] chairman.

3 〔敬語〕 respectfully do.

●無事なるご帰国を謹んで祝し奉ります. We respectfully tender our congratulations on your safe return home. | May we congratulate you on your safe return?
